spring break recap

Nate and I were in Nazareth, PA over spring break watching his younger siblings while his parents are out of town. Nate got the kids up for school every morning, and then we would sleep in a few more hours. He'd play computer games with Kevin until the afternoon when the other kids start getting home. We played baseball, watched movies, baked cookies, played games, went out to eat, did chores, made smoothies, played more games...

Thursday we went into the woods to have a St. Patties Day boat race. Our boats had pretty random names like Barbadus (Kevin), Beware the Pirate (Logan), The Flower Boat of Peace (Maddie), and The Nate Hammer (guess). I called mine the St. Patties Day Destroyer.

Once in the woods, we picked a spot on the stream to start the race. Despite carefully folding and coloring our boats, they floated mere seconds before going under. Logan and Maddie were pretty upset, so we tried to encourage them to enjoy the woods.

We found rock walls and bridges, patches of moss covered rocks and logs near the waters edge, knobby trees, and forest creatures.

We each threw a penny into the stream while making a wish.

Logan "found" two pennies near a hole in a tree and figured they must have been dropped by the Leprechan that lived in the hole.

Friday was our last day in Nazareth, so Nate, Kevin, and I went to the Martin Guitar Factory and took their free tour. It was pretty amazing seeing how meticulously each person works on their one small part in the process.

I know this is the longest post ever, but I need to tell you about the plane ride home. We flew Southwest and were the last to board, so we didn't get to sit next to each other. Instead, I was in a window seat next to an older couple. I started dozing off when I felt the man's arm rest on mine. I awoke to see his wife offering him a piece of hard candy. She put it in his mouth for him, and then her eyes went wide. I then realized that the reason the man's arm was on mine was because he was unresponsive, staring straight ahead of him with his mouth slightly open. The wife frantically threw her tray table up and went to the front of the plane for a coke. I assumed the man was diabetic at this point, and when the wife poured some coke into his mouth that dribbled right back out, she began to panic. She called his name, but he didn't respond. He started making strange noises with his throat. At this point, I was trying to open wide his mouth to make sure he was choking on his tongue or something. I put my hand on his chest and his heart was beating hard, but not too fast or slow. The wife had a flight attendant ask for a nurse or doctor over the intercom. While she was up at the front, I was stuck in my seat by this man, wondering if I was going to witness a death. The flight attendant came and put an oxygen mask over the man's mouth that he started trying to take off. That was a good sign. At least he was coming back to himself. A young doctor came and took the man's pulse. Normal. About this time, after a minute and a half of the man being totally out of it, he started responding normally. In fact, he was annoyed at all the fuss and kept saying, "I'm fine." The doctor tried to explain what was going on and why he was taking his vitals, but the man kept saying, "I'm fine!" And it was true, the man seemed fine. He was a doctor himself, he explained, which made me realize he had good reason to be annoyed at the oxygen mask - oxygen wouldn't help his blood pressure. Finally, he took off the mask and drank his coke which convinced everyone he was alright. The doctor went back to his seat, but the flight attendant would come back every few minutes to ask how he was doing. She had me fill out my info on the "witness" portion of a form. During the rest of the flight, the wife and I were a little jittery every time the man moved an inch or dozed off or coughed... He would check his own pulse every half hour which made me feel both at ease and nervous. When we landed, the man apologized for "ruining my flight" while the wife thanked me for "being so calm!" Anyway, craziest experience on a flight yet.

Let's leave our hut, dear, Get out of our rut, dear, Let's get away from it all.

Nate and I met up for a midday movie on Wednesday, and I showed up wearing a light hoodie. He pointed out that I looked overly dressed which was probably right, but I felt fine. If Hoodie Season wasn't over Wednesday, well then it's definitely ended today.

It's going to be 88 degrees. Arizona summer heat is already rearing its ugly head. We're enjoying the perfect weather now, but soon we'll all be hiding in our homes with little clothing on and cool rags draped over our foreheads trying to prevent brain damage caused by excessive and prolonged heat.

Anyway, at the movie... The one we planned on watching wasn't showing, but they suggested we go in to the free movie sponsored by SCAN - a health plan focused on seniors. So we went in and found ourselves seated with over 100 elderly folk waiting for Country Strong to play. A man came down front with a microphone and explained that "these free movies are put on by AM 1230 KOY every Wednesday, and next week The Fighter will be showing." Wuh? Nate and I just stumbled upon a little treasure that was obviously only advertised on the radio station... that must only be listed to by senior citizens. DJ Danny Davis proceeded to read off raffle ticket winners who won DVDs of Leave it to Beaver and a Frank Sinatra's Greatest Hits CD. The crowd loved it. And although we kinda stick out, Nate and I now have plans to spend every Wednesday at 12:30 with this guy...

Free movies, free AC, and maybe even a free season of the Beav. Thanks KOY!

Would you like to come in for some tea with me and the Mrs.?

I started this drawing to which Missie added a torso, and then Naomi added some legs. I finished it off with the feet. I particularly like the lemonhead head, the x-ray t-shirt, the hair on the legs, and the worm from Labyrinth.

I haven't had this type of silly fun drawing stupid pictures since Mr. Green's study hall with Kelly in high school. I'm just practicing up for next week when Nate and I will be in PA watching after his younger siblings. I don't want them thinking I don't know how to have stupid fun.

i'll go it alone

Thanks to Naomi's link to drawandfoldover.com I wasted part of my morning drawing this without the help of anyone else which is definitely not the point. Waste of time? Absolutely. But I had fun... which is a good way to start a Tuesday.

birthday boy

Nate said to me earlier, "Man, Em. I'm 28."

I do sympathize with him, especially when he's playing pick up basketball at school and 19 year old kids show up. He played some ball on Friday, but he came home happy because he apparently made some stellar moves. He's still got it.

I, on the other hand, have been 28 for 6 months and haven't made any stellar moves since high school.

Saturday night we went to Carrabbas, one of Nate's top 3 favorite places to eat out. On occasion, Nate gets really dramatic about things: basil scented hand soap, Inception, Carrabbas chicken trio. When he does, he gets serious and formal. While watching Nate eat the free chocolate mousse brownie dessert after his heavenly trio, I asked if I could have a bite to which he replied, "Oh yes, please do. This is excellent!" He then sat up straighter and dabbed at the corners of his mouth with his napkin.

When we got home, I decided to jump the gun on the birthday present and give it to him a day early. He'd already bought himself the Star Wars trilogy and so told me not to spend any more money on him. So I cut out 250 little hearts and wrote down something I loved about him on each one. I made it to season 3 of the Bill Cosby show by the time I finished writing them all down. I wasn't expecting Nate to sit and read them all in one sitting, but he did... which made "I love you because you are actually reading all of these" a bit funnier than I'd anticipated.

Before watching some Star Wars, I made Nate his favorite cake - German Chocolate. I'd heard it's better the day after, so making it a day early was the way to go. The only problem was... we couldn't wait a day to taste it.

I like to do time consuming activities while watching movies (like cut out 250 hearts), so I brought out my green clay mask and slopped it all over Nate's face during Star Wars. I thought he looked cute and wanted to document it, but he wasn't too excited about having his picture taken... so I told him to look mean or mad or serious or intimidating. I'm not sure which one this is...

Today for Nate's birthday dinner, I made one of his favorites - lasagna. I made it with italian sausage and mushrooms. It's in the oven now, so we'll see how it turns out. We'll each have a hefty piece of cake for dessert and probably play chess into the evening. I'm blogging now because Nate's at a training for his calling at church, and when he gets home I'll be busy pampering him some more.

Additional note: Thanks for Nash and Haven for their rendition of Happy Birthday via Skype.

Happy Birthday, Nate!

just my imagination

Meet Spots, Penguiny, Floppy, Red, and Ollie. Nicole and I took them for a walk around her room the other day. The little green guy is already trained and so doesn't require a leash. I asked Nicole if there is a stuffed animal that she doesn't have and wants, and she said she wanted a desert tortoise. That's her favorite animal. In fact, she has a real one, Shelly, who is hibernating somewhere in their backyard. I look forward to meeting her, but in the meantime Nate and I found a little stuffed animal turtle that I'm going to give to Nicole. I'm guessing her name will be "Turtley" or "Green."
